All About the 2023 Mosaic Soap Challenge
If you are familiar with my work, you might have noticed that I enjoy using unconventional tools in my soap-making projects.
I like to borrow techniques and equipment from other crafts and hobbies.
Late last year I stumbled across this mosaic tile silicone mould.
Now it is supposed to be used for resin projects, but I had a major lightbulb moment, and my mind was instantly flooded with a tonne of amazing mosaic soap designs.
I was hooked.
Last Christmas I made a couple of festive mosaic soap designs and since then the ideas for different mosaic soap designs have not stopped flowing.
So I’m going to make as many mosaic soap designs as I can this year and show you a few different techniques also.
I want to show you how much fun making mosaic soap can be.
Mosaic Soap Projects
January – Basic Mosaic Soap Bars
This is a basic beginners project showing the ‘grout surround’ mosaic soap method which consists of a simple mosaic picture or pattern laid out on a soap ‘base’, and then surrounded by white ‘soap grout’.
We have chosen two simple floral designs and two simple geometric designs using four different colours.
We used Stephenson Crystal WSLES & SLS Free (white) for the base and grout, and a ratio of 80/20 Stephenson Crystal SLES & SLS Free (clear) and Stephenson Crystal WSLES & SLS Free (white) for the mosaic tiles.

February – Glass Tile Effect Soap Bars
These glass tile effect soap bars use the ‘full coverage’ mosaic soap method where the whole surface of the soap bar is covered with mosaic tiles.
No soap ‘grout’ is used for this method.
These mosaic designs were inspired by a range of glass tile designs found on Pinterest.
We used Stephenson Crystal WSLES & SLS Free (white) for the opaque white mosaic soap tiles, and Stephenson Crystal Low Sweat (clear) mixed with a range of micas, glitter and liquid soap colouring for the semi-opaque and transparent mosaic soap tiles.
We also used some edible gold leaf to gild the back of some transparent tiles for extra highlights.

March – Rose Gold Heart Mosaic Soap Bars
Introducing the ‘cheat’s version’ of mosaic soap 😆.
These Rose Gold Heart Mosaic Soap Bars are so quick and simple to make because we’ve taken a major shortcut by using the cookie cutter mosaic soap technique.
The cookie cutter mosaic soap technique is by far the fastest and easiest way to make gorgeous mosaic soap bars.
We used a ratio of 80/20 Stephenson Crystal SLES & SLS Free (clear) and Stephenson Crystal WSLES & SLS Free (white) for the base bars and grout, while the mosaic tile embeds were poured from Stephenson Crystal SLES & SLS Free (clear) tinted with the most beautiful shade of rose gold mica.

April – Neon Mosaic Soap Bars
These neon mosaic soap bars require a little extra time to piece together, but wow! What an amazing result!
The full coverage, grouted technique is by far the most intensive of all the mosaic soap techniques we have showcased to date.
Thankfully there are a few shortcuts you can take advantage of such as assembling the mosaic soap tile design inside the silicone mould, and pouring clear soap base over the mosaic design in lieu of soap grout if you so wish.
We used Stephenson Crystal SLES & SLS Free (clear) for the mosaic soap tiles and Stephenson Crystal WSLES & SLS Free (white) for the base bars and grout.
If you prefer the clear coat option, we recommend Stephenson Crystal ST (ultra clear) for the top coat.

May – Chess Board Soap Bars
These chess-themed soap bars are another great example of what you can create using the full coverage mosaic tile technique.
Black and white, square mosaic soap tiles have been assembled in a chess board pattern that covers the entire surface of the soap, but wait, there’s more!
Turn the soaps over and the chess board pattern becomes a background for some embedded chess pieces – also made from soap!
Pretty cool, huh?
We used Stephenson Crystal WSLES & SLS Free (white) and Stephenson Crystal ST (ultra clear) to create our chess board soap bars and we scented them with cedarwood and cypress essential oils.

June – Rock Garden Mosaic Soap Bars
Inspired by rock gardens, June’s instalment of the 2023 Mosaic Soap challenge uses the ‘grout surround’ mosaic soap technique.
But this time the grout is black instead of white, creating a whole different effect.
We chose an oval-shaped soap mould to emulate smooth black river rocks and decorated our soap bars with mosaics of garden insects and flowers.
We used Stephenson Crystal SLES & SLS Free (clear) and various coloured micas to create glittery rock garden mosaic soap bars that sparkle in the light.

July – Gingham Soap Bars
These gingham soap bars are another great example of what you can do with the ‘full coverage’ mosaic soap method.
Square mosaic tiles in three different shades have been arranged in a pattern identical to gingham fabric (think picnic baskets, table cloths and summer dresses) to create sweet and summery soap bars in six different colours.
Each soap bar is individually scented with a range of fruity, floral and herbaceous essential oils (lemon, tangerine, rose, lavender, mint and eucalyptus).
We used Stephenson Crystal WSLES & SLS Free (white) for the opaque white mosaic soap tiles, and Stephenson Crystal SLES & SLS Free (clear) mixed with coloured micas and different amounts of white soap base to create mosaic soap tiles in two different shades for each colour.

August – Sea Glass Mosaic Soap Bars
August’s mosaic soap project is inspired by the beautiful, frosted colours of sea glass.
Using a special technique, glass coloured mosaic soap tiles were frosted to look like sea glass and arranged in an abstract pattern atop heart-shaped soap bars.
White soap base was used to ‘grout’ the tiles into place, and the finished soap bars were buffed clean with a dry cloth.
We used Stephenson Crystal WSLES & SLS Free (white) for the base bars and grout, and Stephenson Crystal ST (ultra clear) mixed with liquid soap colouring to create the sea glass mosaic soap tiles.

September – Fall Leaf Mosaic Soap Bars
These Fall Leaf Mosaic Soap Bars are a great way to celebrate the colours and scents of the fall season.
Made using a combination of the ‘full coverage grouted’ and ‘cookie cutter’ mosaic soap techniques, the crisp and colourful fall leaves made from square mosaic soap tiles sit beautifully on creamy base bars that glisten with gold mica.
We used Stephenson Crystal SLES & SLS Free (clear) and beautiful fall shades of mica to create these autumn delights.

October – Buffalo Plaid and Red Pickup Truck Soap Bars
Nothing goes better together than buffalo plaid and a red pickup truck!
We used red, black and aubergine coloured square, mosaic tiles to create a buffalo plaid background and embedded a cute, red, pickup truck in an ultra clear soap base.
It’s all soap and it’s all amazing!
We used Stephenson Stephenson Crystal ST (ultra clear) to create our buffalo plaid soap bars and we scented them with Siberian fir essential oil.

November – White on White Christmas Tree Mosaic Soap Bars
This is the second last project for the year, so we wanted to bring together multiple mosaic soap techniques to make something truly spectacular!
The gorgeous white Christmas-themed bars combine the full coverage, grouted technique with the cookie cutter technique. Aren’t they stunning?
We used Stephenson Crystal SLES & SLS Free (clear) and Stephenson Crystal WSLES & SLS Free (white) to make these little beauties and we scented them with a forest bathing blend of essential oils.
