Valentines Day chocolates with a hint of essential oils

If you are looking for a Valentine’s Day activity that’s lots of fun, and simple enough to do with the kids, then essential oil flavoured chocolates are the way to go.

I whipped up three different flavours in under an hour – you are limited only by your imagination. Even if you only have a small collection of essential oils you can still come up with some amazing flavours.

I need to stress that you must ensure that any essential oil you use clearly specifies it is suitable for flavouring use (check the label!), and you only need a small amount.

I recommend dropping the oils onto a spoon first before adding them to your chocolate. That way you can avoid adding too much if the essential oil comes out of the bottle too fast.

Here are some delicious but simple combinations to get you started.

What you need to make essential oil Valentines Day chocolates

Jaffa Chocolates

  • 100g of your favourite milk chocolate
  • 3 drops Wild Orange essential oil
  • Chocolate mould

Lime and Black Pepper Chocolate

  • 100g of your favourite dark chocolate
  • 1 drops Black Pepper essential oil*
  • 2 drops Lime essential oil*
  • Chocolate mould

* You may need to increase the number of drops of essential oil depending on the strength of your dark chocolate.  I absolutely give you permission to dip your finger in to do a taste test!

Method

Break up chocolate and put into a glass or ceramic bowl.  Heat in a microwave on medium heat in 30 second bursts until melted.  Add essential oils and stir well. Spoon into chocolate mould and place in fridge to set.

Then, if you happen to have some freeze dried fruit on hand as I did, it gets even more exciting!

Strawberry and Bergamot Chocolate

  • 100g of your favourite milk chocolate
  • 3 drops Bergamot essential oil
  • 5g freeze dried strawberries
  • Chocolate Mould

Blitz freeze dried strawberries in a blender or food processor until they are a fine powder (or alternatively crush with a mortar and pestle). Break up chocolate and put into a glass or ceramic bowl. Heat in a microwave on medium heat in 30 second bursts until melted. Add strawberry powder and essential oils and stir well. Spoon into chocolate mould and place in fridge to set.

This was my favourite flavour by far!  I think I saw some freeze dried apple a the supermarket too.  Apple and Cinnamon Chocolate is definitely on the cards!  Don’t worry, if it’s any good you’ll be sure to hear from me.

Happy Valentines Day!
